Pakistan bombs Taliban in the northwest

Fighting between the Pakistani military and the Taliban in the mountainous northwest region of the country continues, the AFP reports.

Pakistan signed a peace treaty with the Talbian earlier this year. The government agreed to accept the Taliban’s control over the province of Swat. It even allowed the Taliban to impose Sharia, or Islamic law, in controlled areas.

As the military steps up its efforts against the Taliban, the U.N. says the war is causing a humanitarian crisis. About half a million stranded civilians have registered with the authorities since May 2.

The Obama administration has proposed a $7.5 billion aid package to help displaced people in need of basic supplies.

At the same time, Taliban fighters attacked an Afghan government buildings in Khost, close to the border with Pakistan, Al Jazeera reports.

Afghan military and U.S. special forces were engaged in a shootout with Taliban fighters holed up in a municipal building.
