The U.S., Pakistan, and Afghanistan held a three way meeting in Washington Wednesday. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called it a “breakthrough,” USA Today reports.
All three sides took the opportunity to express support for each other in fighting terrorism. Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Afghanistan and Pakistan were “conjoined twins” who shared joy and suffering.
The Huffington Post blogger William Bradley called the summit “troubled.” Though the leaders had kind words for each other, Bradley said Obama showed cool body language toward both Karzai and Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari.
On the same day, the president made a phone call to Chinese President Hu Jintao, Reuters reports. They talked about threats in North Korea and Pakistan, as well as the new flu virus drawing international alarm.
They did not discuss a standoff between a U.S. Navy Ship and two Chinese fishing boats in the Yellow Sea. China accused the U.S. of violating international law.
